Abstract

This thesis is about encouragement and friendship in John Michael Green's The Fault in Our Stars. The novels is seen as representations of people who need encouragement and friendship to continue their lives. This is a library research and applies mimetic theory proposed by M. H. Abrams who says that art is an explanation of art which is basically an imitation of aspects of the universe. However, literature as an art not only imitates the universe but creates a new world that is taken from the real world. This means that the story reflects real life through literary works. The analysis focused on the encouragement and friendship represented by the characters of Hazel Grace Lancaster, Augustus Waters, Isaac, Hazel's parents and Augustus's parents who provide those things both within themselves and to give other people. It is concluded that the novel portrays people who can cope with problems and diseases through self encouragement: they themselves have encouraged in their deep inside to face life reality. Besides, they can get stronger hope to life through having friendship.
