Generosity and Sacrifice in Nicholas Sparks’ The Best of Me

This thesis is about generosity and sacrifice in Nicholas Sparks’ The Best of Me. The novel is seen as the representation of people who have generosity and willing to sacrifice for the sake of others in facing life through the conditions of the characters in the novel. This is a library research and applies mimetic theory by proposed by Abrams saying that literature is the imitation of the real life. The analysis is focused on generosity and sacrifice which are represented by the characters Dawson Cole, Amanda Collier and Tuck Hostetler. The author creates Dawson who has generosity and he gives his heart to Amanda’s son. Dawson, until him death, always give his best to another person. Dawson as a kind and generous person is the presentative of man who devote the feelings of love, care, and even his life to the beloved one and others. Amanda sacrifice her time to help her family and her parents even though she was sick. She does love her mother because her father had passed away. And Tuck is a kind person who willing to give time and encouragement to others. His goal is to make success which brings Dawson and Amanda meet each other. He is a symbol of generous people who gives money, home, documents and possession to Dawson without any return. They can sacrifice everything they have through to give time, money and encouragement to others. In conclusion, Nicholas Charles Sparks, in his novel clearly portrays people who have generosity and sacrifice which are given to others who really in need without hoping any return.
