Tenses in Junior High School English Textbook

This research deals with the analysis of tenses in a Junior High School English Textbook. The aim of this research is to investigate the types, functions, and frequency of tense usage within the textbook ―An English Course for Junior High School Students Grade VIII‖. The analysis focuses exclusively on the use of tenses. In conducting this research, the researchers adhered to specific procedures. First, they carefully examined the content across the textbook 8 chapters, consisting of 180 pages, to identify instances of each tense. In the second phase, the researchers categorized the different kinds of tenses observed. After categorizing the tenses, the third step involved a detailed exploration of the functions served by each tense within the context of the textbook exercises and examples. In the final phase of the analysis, the researchers analyzed the frequency of each tense function. After analyzing the data, the researchers concluded that the textbook contains 7 kinds of tenses, which serve 23 distinct functions. In total, there were 541 occurrences of tense usage documented throughout the book.
