Abstract
This study aims to discuss the phenomenon of anxiety in Ian McEwans Atonement (2001), with a special focus on two types of anxiety, namely neurotic anxiety and moral anxiety. The research method used is qualitative, which allows researchers to explore the characters and psychological dynamics faced by the characters in the novel. The research data sources consist of the text of the novel Atonement and various relevant journals to support the analysis. The theory used in this study is psychoanalysis developed by Sigmund Freud, which provides a framework for understanding the internal conflicts experienced. The data collection technique was carried out through in depth exploration of the novel and analysis of literature related to the theme of anxiety. Data analysis was carried out by identifying and interpreting elements that reflect neurotic anxiety and moral anxiety in the main character. The conclusion of this study shows that the portrait of human anxiety depicted in Atonement reflects the complexity of neurotic and moral anxiety. Through the psychological journey of the main character, this anxiety influences the actions and decisions main character makes. The neurotic anxiety of the main character that arises from main character statements and inability to understand reality interacts with moral anxiety related to the responsibility and consequences of main character actions. Thus, the main character becomes a strong representation of the human struggle in dealing with deep anxiety, as well as its impact on interpersonal relationships and the search for the meaning of life. This study is expected to provide deeper insight into how anxiety can shape individual identity and morality in the context of a broader narrative.
