Abstract

This thesis discusses self-perseverance in Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games. The novel represents the self-perseverance possessed by people such as grit, motivation and conscientiousness to survive under very stressful conditions. This study is library research and applies mimetic theory proposed by Abrams saying that literature is an imitation of the real world. This analysis focuses on grit, motivation and conscientiousness, as the basis for self-perseverance possessed by the characters in the novel.
The writers creates the characters of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark to show that even if you do not have a family to support you in something you are doing, you must still have the courage and unwavering faith to keep doing what you think is good. Katniss lost her father which forced her to look after her depressed mother and 12 year old sister meanwhile Peeta, he did not get support from his parents when he was chosen as one of the game's tribute. However, as long as the game goes on, they work together to survive even in a way that they should not do so that even if they do
not really have the support from their family, at least they have each other to support themself. In conclusion, the author, Suzanne Collins through her novel The Hunger Games portrays how self-perseverance is needed in our lives to survive in difficult times even though we do not have people as our support.
