Abstract
This research discusses excessive dreams phenomenon through characters, settings,
image, plots and points of views in Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.
Excessive dreams are often referred to as unrealistic dreams are conditions in which
someone has hopes or goals that are far beyond their abilities. Excessive dreams often
backfire and bring destruction when expectations are not met. This study uses
narrative qualitative research with the type of research. In addition, the data is
supplemented with relevant sources using library research. This study uses the theory
of literary sociology proposed by Wallek and Warren. This narrative qualitative
research analyzes how the characters in the novel pursue materialistic dreams in
destructive ways. Through the analysis of literary sociology, this study reveals two
main strategies used by the characters to achieve their dreams: (1) circulations liquor,
which are sources of quick but high-risk profits. (2) deception, which involves
manipulation and lies to gain financial gain and social status. Both of these methods
not only damage the individual, but also violate social and legal norms. The results of
this study highlight the dangers of pursuing unrealistic dreams.
